Eat like an Italian: names and actions for Italian meals

Have you ever wondered how to eat like an Italian? Well, the first way to do so is to start by the language.

 

Sure, it’s important to know what to eat at each time of the day. But knowing how to call the different Italian meals is certainly a plus, if you really want to think like an Italian.

 

Then, each meal has an action associated with it. Just like in English, there are specific expressions for each of them. It’s just that the Italian expressions might be a bit different and, therefore, create confusion.

NAMES AND ACTIONS FOR ITALIAN MEALS

 

 

Here is how meals are called in Italian:

 

LA colazione = breakfast

 

LO spuntino = morning snack

 

IL pranzo = lunch

 

LA merenda = afternoon snack

 

LA cena = dinner

 

Now, here are the actions associated with these meals:

 

COLAZIONE

Fare colazione = have breakfast

Example: Faccio colazione con caffè e cornetto. (I always have breakfast with coffee and a croissant)

 

SPUNTINO

Fare uno spuntino = have a snack

Example: Faccio sempre uno spuntino a metĂ  mattina (I always have a snack in the middle of the morning)

 

PRANZO

Pranzare = have lunch

Example: Pranzo sempre a mezzogiorno e mezza. (I always have lunch at half past 12.)

 

MERENDA

Fare merenda = have a snack

Example: Di solito, faccio merenda alle quattro. (Usually, I have my snack at 4.)

 

CENA

Cenare = have dinner

Example: In casa mia ceniamo sempre alle 8. (In my house we always have dinner at 8.)
