PARLARE e DIRE: when and how to use them

PARLARE e DIRE: when and how to use them

Parlare e dire. Two verbs, one big dilemma: when and how to use them? I noticed during my classes that some people get confused over these two verbs, so the aim of this lesson is to clarify what they mean and when they should be used.

Parlare stands for the English verb to speak, and we use it to indicate the mere act of speaking or to say that we, or someone else, speak a certain language.

Like in these examples:

Marco parla l’inglese e il russo.

Marco speaks English and Russian.

Luisa parla tanto.

Luisa speaks a lot.

Giorgia parla veramente poco.

Giorgia speaks very little.

Then, there are also situations when parlare stands for the English verb to talk. In this case, we can use it to create the exmpression to talk about.

On the other hand, dire stands for the English verb to say, and we can use it in examples like these ones.
